My Love/Hate Relationship with Fallout: New Vegas

Oh Fallout: New Vegas, I really like you but I’m not “in like” with you. For every awesome thing you have going for you, you mess it up with your awfulness.

I love/hate the setting:

F0:NV has some pretty amazing sights to see, especially the Strip its self. Las Vegas at night is like no other experience and FO:NV did a fantastic job with its rendition of Sin City. All the casinos have a personality all their own, from the sauveness of Ultra-Luxe, the class of The Tops and the wonderful Lucky 38 tower. It’s a rather gorgeous piece of art. Everything else on the hand is kinda dull. The main color of the land outside the strip is sand and mud with a few plants to change-up the scenery. A lot of the buildings, both inside and out, look like they were taken straight of FO3 and plopped in the Mojave. I understand being post apocalyptic but a little variety never hurt anyone. In all fairness to FO:NV though, Las Vegas is in the middle of nowhere.

I love/hate the gameplay:

The newer Fallout games are a cool mix of FPS and RPG and the S.P.E.C.I.A.L system of character creation works well. I tend to play my first play through as a good guy and then play again as the devil incarnate. That being said, It isn’t as fun being evil as it was with FO3. I like the idea of working with factions to take over the strip but I wanna be more recognized for my evil ways. I want to kill everything I see and not have it affect my “street cred” with other factions. I do applaud FO:NV for making killing easier with the new iron sights like most other modern shooters but I find myself relying mostly on the V.A.T.S still. I can’t believe its taken me this long to mention it but Holy Shit Is This Game Buggy. If lost hours of mission time from bugs and game freezes, it’s almost like this game was never beta-tested and this is AFTER a huge patch to fix the numerous issues. It’s never fun falling into invisible walls and losing companions.

Damn...sliced it

This isn't a screenshot, its a video of the game freezing

I love/hate Obsidian Entertainment:

Obsidian Entertainment is notorious when it comes buggy and rushed games its seems. Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords was amazing but racked with problems, their recent RPG Alpha Protocol had all the potential in the world, again, held back by shoddy gameplay. Now FO:NV is the latest game to be infest with bugs, not tiny little ones but like the ones from Starship Troopers. Yet, I devoured KOTOR II and FO:NV and I was really looking forward till Alpha Protocol. How can I find myself still playing games from a company that continues burn their fans with lackluster game testing?

The man can act, rap and Game

You're preaching to choir, Mr. Ice-T

All these things are preventing me from loving this game as much as I loved Fallout 3 but I still really, really, really, REALLY, like this game. Really.

I’ve barely gotten anywhere in the story and I can already say that I’ve lost around 5 hours worth of gametime due to bugs. And I don’t know if you have this problem, but my VATS system glitches and my character doesn’t shoot and everything just stay in slo-mo until I die or my companion kills the enemy. It happens quite often too, usually right after I reload.

I have this weird thing where my character raises his arms up when I try and look at my pip 3000 and I get a lot freezes when I’m shooting people. Awful framerate issues too.
